Monument to the sardine seller

Monument to the sardine seller

Address:
Paseo de la sardinera

This sculpture, made in copper, is the work of an artist from Bilbao by the name of J. Lucarini. It was erected in 1964 to honour the role of the - sardineras -, women sardine hawkers, whose labour has brought fame to Santurtzi.

Although there are few remaining fisherwomen of the old-style, with their - saucy - and cheery dispositions, they are still part of the popular tapestry and they are ever-present in folklore and in festive activities.
