This sculpture, made in copper, is the work of an artist from Bilbao by the name of J. Lucarini. It was erected in 1964 to honour the role of the - sardineras -, women sardine hawkers, whose labour has brought fame to Santurtzi.
Although there are few remaining fisherwomen of the old-style, with their - saucy - and cheery dispositions, they are still part of the popular tapestry and they are ever-present in folklore and in festive activities.
